I’ve been away for a while, and I apologize. I went to two more Tori Amos shows and I’ve been trying to pick up the slack after missing three days of work. Let’s see here. Overall, I found this run to be the best thing she’s done since the Strange Little Tour, in terms of the energy and the level of playing. As a writer, I understand how the stuff I pen is much better when...
Wow. I’ve only gone to three Tori shows and I’m exhausted. I have no idea how I did 50 in 02-03. But looking back, it’s no wonder I didn’t have the best time on the Lottapianos Tour. I was probably comatose. I pretty much knew the show after San Diego would be a tough act to follow. I imagine Santa Barbara is how Bill Clinton’s little brother feels. I didn’t...
This has to have been the worst month of my life as far as my physical health is concerned. It started off with bronchitis, middled with a horrible knee injury, and ended this weekend with the worst case of food poisoning I’ve ever had in my life. I didn’t realize it was possible to vomit out of one’s nose, but it turns out, it totally is! I went to Oakland this weekend for work,...
My article on the Sixers’ Andre Iguodala came out today. It’s in the Magazine and also on the website. I’m so tired right now from traveling that I don’t have anything witty to say. So thank you to Andre for being so cool, and for allowing me to hang out with you over the last twelve weeks. And thanks also to Eric Lindros, Ryan Howard, Charles Barkley, Vince Papale, Lute...
Last night Lyndsey and I went to the most awesome dive bar in the history of all things seedy, Bar 119. Its couches were stripped of leather and its walls rotted off their frames. That being said, we got to watch an old Asian woman high on coke play a young white male hipster in pool, which I found to be more awesome than the Texas vs. USC Rose Bowl in 2006. And for whatever reason, every other...

December is almost here. I can’t even believe it. That feature I’ve been working on for six weeks will be out in the Magazine next Thursday. I’m going back to California soon. I’ll see some friends and catch the last few Tori Amos shows in Southern California. I’m trying to figure out where I will be for New Year’s, since New York is a nightmare. I’m...
Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. Things have been kind of nutty. I went to the wedding of the century over the weekend, and I’m still recovering. No, it wasn’t mine. It was just that fun. So busy was I having fun, in fact, that I forgot to take any pictures. Balls. Hopefully everyone I know will keep sending them to me. I was wearing my favorite red dress, and surrounded by...
The hole is healing slowly, thanks for all your well-wishes. I’m not able to bend my knee just yet, but at least the bleeding stopped a few hours ago. I would like to take this opportunity to state something so completely obvious that I may have failed to mention it in the past. Alicia Keys is so frikkin good it almost isn’t real. She almost single-handedly makes up for the fact that...
Greetings from my Vicodin haze. There will probably be some radio silence for a few days while my body attempts to heal itself. Yesterday morning a skateboarder cut me off on Second Ave, and I fell. Hard. My knee is totally shredded, and has a hole in it the size of a marble. I spent all day in the ER, where they thought it was so bad I might need surgery. They took one of these 20 inch needles...
Thank you for all the encouragement after my last post, everyone. After I tooled around here, I went and emailed the three people who I’m most worried about impressing with this book, announced my intention to write a book, and told them they were the three people I’m most worried about impressing with said book. They were all enormously positive in their responses, so now I really...
If one were to click here, one might hear Tori Amos’ performance of “Blood Roses” last night. But what kind of moron would want to hear that song live? I remember when I first moved to New York City and I had no writing work to speak of, I would get up every morning at the crack of 1 pm, haul my cookies down to Kudo Beans on the corner of 3rd Street and 1st Ave, and sit...

Pirate's 1st Birthday!
Happy 1st birthday, Pirate Naveen Jolie-Pitt Abdul-Jabbar Knight!
These have been some crazy times, indeed, and I am back to coughing up green bits of my lung. I am beginning to think I have some sort of chronic bronchitis that needs medical attention. I plan to go soon. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even FEEL sick but I have all this yucky stuff in my lungs/throat/tonsils, whatever. I plan to go to the doctor, so thank you to all of my...
1998 all over again
Just when I thought the world was safe and I was done going to Tori Amos shows, she goes and plays “She’s Your Cocaine” and tells a group full of people (without prompting) that the band almost has “Raspberry Swirl” down and that it will be coming soon. I’ve never heard the former song, and I haven’t heard the latter since 1998. If they become staples,...
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, you might consider going to the movies to see “Gone Baby Gone.” I enjoyed it as much as anything else I’ve seen this year, which surprised me.
Last night went better than I’d hoped. I bowled a 108. And someone brought me a pair of new socks. And I ate all organic foods, and I woke up this morning feeling like a new person. I might even attend a Pilates class tonight. Yah. I’ve got this bag of baby carrots sitting on my desk that is completely infuriating me. Some taste like candy corn, some taste like carrots, and some taste...
I’m in Philadelphia now. Last night I met up with Tim and Ellie and Basil at Bar Fly, and we proceeded to drink like it was 2003. I knew there was a reason I stopped doing Irish car bombs. Ellie is going to be mad at me for calling them Irish car bombs, since that isn’t really P.C., but I don’t know how else to describe chugging a pint of Guinness with a shot of Bailey’s...
I saw Band of Horses last night, although I don’t really remember it because they didn’t take the stage until 2:30 a.m. I believe I had a Sparks energy drank, took my seat in the bleachers, and then slept with my eyes open through their set. After they played my favorite song, “The Great Salt Lake,” second, I told my friends it’d be fine by me if we left, and I meant...
One of my favorite groups, Band of Horses, is playing a free show tonight in my neighborhood. It doesn’t start until 1:15 a.m. Doors are at 12:30. I am exhausted. It is 9:10. My options include: A) two hour nap B) shower and walk the dog for natural invigoration C) Starbucks Last night I went to a club and I somehow wound up in the middle of Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Man of the Year...
I’m kind of in a weird place with this blog right now because I can’t really write about anything I want to write about here because of either work or personal conflicts. I came across this blog which has some of the best stuff I’ve ever seen on a blog, and I realized she can pull it off not only because she is a talented writer, but also because she is writing under the soft...
I am going to be spending a fair amount of time in Philadelphia this month. Does anyone from Philly have any recommendations re: where to eat and what to do? I’ve been to that Science Center, the Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall already, and I’m not into cheesesteak. I like antique shopping, flea markets, baseball, and bars with good jukeboxes and nice bartenders. Anyone? Ah,...
I stayed up until 2 am painting my dining annex a lovely cappuccino color, and now my body feels like it’s been sandwiched by a semi. My ceilings are really high, and reaching towards ceilings hurts when you haven’t been to yoga in a year.
I’m back from my leaf peeping trip. It was pretty much a bust since there were no leaves, but it did allow me to go shopping in all these antique barns in Maine for stuff for my apt. I made out so well (and so inexpensively) that Lindsay and Neil want to go back in November. My apartment is about ready to be unveiled. I just need to do a few more things, then I will be posting pictures for...
I am now 5-0 as an NFL fan, as my Cowboys just took out the hapless Bills. I once dated a diehard Bills fan, so I can attest to their haplessness on many levels. I am enjoying this immensely, even though my allegiance to America’s team has lead to ridicule in many social situations. When I jumped on the bandwagon in early August, I had no idea that it actually ran on four greased wheels....
My friend Sarah is trying to make the LPGA tour, and she was in this funny segment with Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz. I got a kick out of it. Last night I went out with the boys to Croxley’s ale house, where we had spicy wings, regular wings, BBQ wings, irish nachos, and Brooklyn Lager. It must have affected my mojo, because I had about a six hour long dream in which I was a ninja...
Somehow, when I wasn’t looking, Weeds got good again. It happened this Monday’s episode, and I noticed it when Shane and Isabelle were laughing on grass and wondering why they’d never hung out before. In offing U-Turn did the series save itself? Maybe so. I love Showtime hyped the holy out of Mary-Kate Olsen being on the show, and in her first three episodes she’s been on...
If you haven’t already done so, do yourself a favor and watch this video of Paris Hilton on David Letterman from over the weekend. Some say, instant classic. Other, instant classic. [video no longer available - 2008] I have been listening to quite a lot of Imogen Heap lately. I don’t really have much to say about it, except that good music is nice. It feels really great to write the...

If any of you care about the Dodgers’ demise, you can go over to the LATimes website and read what I had to say about it this morning. That sound you just heard was de-oxygenated blood rushing through the vein in my forehead. Apparently, if one desires to be the frontperson of a happenin’ rock band, he/she can buy the job on ebay
I apologize for being MIA this past week. Things got pretty nutty. Thursday night I went to Marquee for James Blunt’s record release party, and had a truly amazing Jay-Z and Beyonce sighting. I was bouncing around like a maniac to “Change Clothes” and I actually had no idea he was in the club. I whirled around at one point and the Hov was standing five feet behind me. I gasped,...
Something incredible just happened. I cracked open an egg, and two yolks came out. Twins! Happy Wednesday, everyone. I went to Dallas for the Cowboys game on Sunday night, and I’m happy to report that I have a 1-0 lifetime record as an NFL fan. I was going to write down a bunch of things to tell you guys, but the only two things I scribbled in my note pad were “36 cheerleaders,”...
This Rilo Kiley record is a lot better than I expected. Webmaster J better get his ears checked. Rilo Kiley- “Breakin’ Up”
The US Open was incredible last night. Roger Federer wasn’t on top of his game, but he didn’t even break a sweat. He kind of reminds me of an invincible mile runner who bides his time while upstart little punks try to sprint their guts out on the second lap, keeping the same pace and ultimately winning by thirty seconds. He dropped the first set and then cruised to victory in the next...
Last night Bill and I were watching Titanic when I posed the question of who would play Jack and Rose were the movie being filmed today. I came up with Jake Gyllenhaal for Jack, and Bill submitted Keira Knightley for Rose, before I realized it would probably just be Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams again. Webmaster J (who sadly moved back to California on Saturday) spotted Ryan Gosling by himself...
Holy sketchy gumballs, it’s September. Where has this year gone? It’s two-thirds over, already. We have a new album of the week, and I’ve archived some things, but I accidentally sent entries from May 2007 into cyberspace purgatory. Can any tech wizards out there help me retrieve those? Kanye’s new album is dropping any day now, and I’ve only really been able to...

In court documents filed by Kevin Federline’s lawyer, it’s been reported that Britney Spears earns $738,000 a month. That seems like a heck of a lot of money, until you realize that the Yankees can field a starting line-up —minus a secondbaseman but with three starting pitchers and a closer— who all make more than Spears does. Here’s the breakdown, in bones per month:...

Shocking confession #1: I love, no really, LOVE the Rilo Kiley SPIN cover story. Shocking confession #2: I set Britney Spears’ new song “Baby Boy” as my first ringtone on my new phone, making it my first mp3 (non-midi) ringtone ever. Shocking confession #3: I decided today to become a Dallas Cowboys fan, for no good reason other than I need an NFL team to enrich my Monday nights...
Dan and Deborah and Rilo Kiley
Dan and Deborah went to see Rilo Kiley in London last week some time. Dan took pictures, and they both offered their thoughts. From Dan: Live = t3h awesome. The songs hold up fairly well with the rest in a live set - they are fairly good songs overall I just think the album performances/production must be lacking. Smoke Detector is fun and silly and totally dancable (I loved it). Dejalo...
Have you all heard the new Britney song? I actually like it. I’m probably going to Hell. Britney Spears- “Baby Boy”
This weekend I am going to a going away party for Webmaster J and my friend Jackie, who are departing this fair city for San Diego and Ohio, respectively. I can’t actually believe they’re going. It’s been brought to my attention that I don’t post pictures on my site anymore, and that people like pictures. (I suppose if I ever write a book, I will need to keep this in...
Too tired. Syllables like sentences. Hurts to think. Rental cars and cabs and walking twenty blocks and rain and parking garages and New Jersey and Home Depot and IKEA and building shelves and a dresser and bagging up clothes for the Salvation Army and getting a new ATM card and fact checking an article and getting a nine month old chiweenie used to the city again can leave one feeling like one...
